Exercise 2

Summarize: What concerns/criticisms do some social and cultural anthropologists have regarding the demand for data sharing?

  • The necessity of data sharing is not recognized because data transparency – i.e., a detailed presentation of the research context and data collection process, as well as the data on which statements in publications are based – is already a fundamental principle of good scientific practice in the field.
  • The high resource expenditure (time and costs) required for data processing and curation is viewed critically.
  • There is concern that awareness of potential future publication of field documents may influence field recordings, potentially threatening trust and social relationships with research participants.
