Exercise 1
What could you do to reduce your digital footprint? Conduct internet research.
Proposed Solution
Here are some ways to reduce your digital footprint:
- Use devices for a longer period.
- Buy used or refurbished devices.
- When purchasing new devices, check if they are upgradeable or allow part replacements (e.g., battery exchange).
- Regularly clean up and delete data stored in clouds.
- Avoid duplicate online data storage whenever possible.
- Use „green“ providers.
- Charge the battery efficiently (keep charge between 20-80%).
- Use video meetings sparingly and turn off video transmission when possible.
- Reduce screen brightness.
- Enable energy-saving mode.
- Turn off/shut down devices after use.
- Use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data for large downloads and streaming.
- Streaming: Watch movies/online videos in lower resolution.
- Streaming: Download movies, videos, and frequently played music over Wi-Fi before watching/listening.
- Delete emails regularly or avoid sending unnecessary emails (one email without an attachment produces 1 gram of CO₂).
- Enable ad blockers (Adblocker) in the browser.
- Use „green“ providers (email, cloud, hosting, etc.).
- Use „green“ search engines.
- Use social media more consciously, e.g., upload fewer images and videos (including status updates).
